Whole Wheat Lasagna Bolognese


Gee....it is winter time and we love comfort food  so what better way to cook this particular recipe and it is great for you too as I use whole wheat lasagna pasta and it has more fibre than the regular ones.....I also use minced turkey and minced sirloin beef for the filling for the lasagna...to cut down the fat but still keep the cheese ....I also add some spinach for the bechamel sauce and add some more vegetables in the filling with the meat....check out the recipe then....enjoy....

Lasagna Bolognese 
Ingredients : 

1 box whole wheat lasagna noodles


Bolognese Sauce 
1 red onion - chopped finely
2 cloves garlic - chopped finely
8 oz minced turkey
8 oz minced sirloin beef
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp ground black pepper
1 large can whole tomatoes - crushed
1/2 tsp tomato paste
1 medium broccoli - cut into small florets
2 carrots - cubed
1 tsp dried basil 
1 tsp dried thyme
2 tsps dried oregano
salt and  black pepper to taste
2 tbsps olive oil


Bechamel Sauce  
1 oz butter 
2 oz butter plus  1 tbps flour 
2 cups  milk 
pinch of nutmeg
1/2  cup baby spinach  
salt and  ground black pepper 
2 tbsps grated parmesan cheese 
6 oz grated  Mozzarella cheese 

Method : 

First heat a pot filled with water on the stove, then add the lasagna noodles into the pot and boil according to the directions on the lasagna box to al dente. Remove the hot water and add cold water to it to prevent from sticking. 
Heat a large skillet  on medium heat and add some olive oil to saute the chopped garlic and onions till fragrant. Add  some minced turkey and minced sirloin beef  to the skillet and fry till browned. Add all the spices, crushed tomatoes , tomato paste , broccoli and carrots,  salt and ground black pepper to taste. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 20 minutes till it thickens.
Heat another skillet at medium heat and melt some butter. Add the flour and stir in slowly with a wooden spoon until  a paste forms.
Remove from heat and add the cold milk a little at a time and continue to stir on the stove and add the remaining of the milk. Stir constantly over medium heat till sauce thickens . Add the baby spinach and stir it well incorporated. Add a pinch of nutmeg with  salt and ground black pepper to taste. Add the grated parmesan cheese into it.


To Assemble :
Preheat the oven to 375 F. 
Oil the bottom 13 by 9 by 2 inches  baking dish and then layer the  lasagna as desired starting with some lasagna noodles alternating with the bolognese sauce and bechamel sauce. Season well between   each layer and finish with a layer of  pasta and grated mozzarella cheese on the top layer to finish. Bake the lasagna in the middle of the oven 
for about 35 to 40 minutes  till golden brown. 



    Whole Wheat Lasagna Bolognese
