My mum used to buy these baked beef curry puffs wrapped up with crispy puff pastry from a local bakery in my hometown when we were younger and we loved the eat them for our tea time snacks on every Sunday afternoon as they were hot and tasty when they just come out from the oven......yum....I can still remember the buttery taste of the puff pastry which melts in your mouth when you bite into the curry puffs.....
Over the years, I was searching and searching for a better and healthier recipe to make it with less butter and I did find a good recipe and changed the ingredients , then tried it out till I got this final recipe which has less butter and used minced sirloin for the filling and baked it too....
Ingredients : Water Dough
16 oz plain flour
7 fl oz ice water + 1 tbsp lemon juice
2 tbsp margarine
Method:
Make a hole in the centre of the flour in the bowl and add the ice water and lemon juice and margarine into it. Combine them together with your fingers and mix well till incorporated. Leave it for 10 minutes.
Ingredients : Oil Dough
8 oz plain flour
6 oz butter
Method:
Rub the butter into the flour mixture and then leave the dough for 10 minutes.
Ingredients for Filling :
500 gms minced sirloin beef
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 tbsp soya sauce
1 tsp sugar
4 red potatoes - cut into cubes & cooked
2 tbsps curry powder
2 shallots - minced
2 garlic - minced
1 onion- minced
1 egg ( for egg wash)
Method:
Heat the frying pan and fry the shallots, onion and garlic till fragrant. Then add curry powder.Fry the minced beef till cooked through.Add the diced cooked potatoes ,seasonings and cook till dry.Taste and put it in a dish to cool completely.
Roll the water dough into a rectangle and flatten the oil dough and put it on top of the water dough.
Then roll it out like a swiss log. Flatten it and roll it like a swiss roll again. After that, divide into 20 equal portions. Roll out each portion into a round disk. Put about 2 teaspoons of filling into the pastry and fold into a semi-circle. Pinch to make decorative edge as shown on the video as attached below :

Preheat the oven to 375F / 190C.
Finish filling all the pastry dough and arrange the curry puffs about 1 inch apart on a lined baking sheet and brush them with some egg wash before baking them in the oven for about 30-35 minutes till they are golden brown and crispy.
